Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures
(a) Corn Cobs, Husks, Stalks to Improve
Concrete Durability
Corn cobs and
stover ash from leftover husks and stalks may strengthen concrete, say
researchers from University of Nebraska at Kearney. Read more.
(b)
Eco-Friendly Concrete Traps CO2 Forever While Being Stronger
We've been able to keep 16,000,000 pounds of CO2 from going
into the atmosphere," says Justin Lazenby with Thomas Concrete. Read more.
(c) New Concrete
Road Repair Material
Researchers at the University of
Manitoba have developed a cementitious material that combines two important
features, strength and quick hardening, that can be used for the partial depth
repair of concrete pavements. Read more.
(d) Roller Compacted Concrete with Power
Floating
This new process represents an
advancement in RCC pavements and results
in an engineered pavement that is fast to lay, with the appearance and
durability of a conventional concrete surface. Read more.
(e) Cities Agree to Make New
Buildings Net-Zero by 2030
The places we live and work are some of the greatest
contributors to climate change. Buildings generate over half of the total
greenhouse gas emissions for most cities, and in some cities, like London and
Paris, it’s closer to 70 percent. A new mayoral coalition made
up of 19 cities worldwide would require all new buildings to produce as much
energy as they consume. Read more.
(f) Technologies for Extended Floor Joints
Joints in industrial floors are the source of many long-term
durability problems. Reducing the number of joints, or eliminating them
entirely, will produce more durable slabs and happier owners. Read more.
Books
(a) Mineral
Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor
& Francis Group
Written
for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable
concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks
at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and
mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also
examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to
cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it
encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement
and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction
industry. Read More.
(b) Blissful Souls All Of Us: Author: Dr Jayant D Bapat:
Publisher: CreateSpace, USA.
The Book is a
result of author's quest to remain happy forever. It focuses on
self-improvement through meditation. The real and original nature of self,
common to all human beings, is empathic, pure and joyful. However, that ‘self’
has deviated considerably from its original nature. Meditation is a time-tested
tool to reach the original nature of self. Like exercise is for the body,
meditation is for the mind. Practice controlled breathing or pranayam to assist
meditation. The book gives helpful tips to practice meditation for
self-improvement. Blissful experiences gained during meditation are useful
resolving conflicts, reducing stress, building durable personal relationships
and recording improved performance at the work. Meditation and controlled breathing
balance the intelligence. The exercise teaches to take a holistic view of life
and life’s problems. Book is available in both print and Kindle version. Visit
the link to buy/review the book.
