Cement Manufacturing

(a) Lafarge Canada Partners with Svante on Carbon Capture

Carbon-capture technology developed by Svante Inc. has been installed at the plant to trap CO2 produced from the industrial processes. The technology enables the cement facility to capture the CO2 contained in the cement flue gas and to reuse it for CO2-cured concrete, thus storing it permanently. Read more.

(b) Carbon Capture Projects Upcoming in France, Poland                        Good news for carbon capture in cement production with new projects announced in France and Poland. However, none of the projects are full-scale industrial carbon capture installations; most of them are consortiums of one sort or another and that they are all subsidised or want to be. Read more.

Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures

(a) Tips for Successful Hot Weather Concreting                                              As a contractor, you’re likely used to ordering, placing, and curing concrete in hot weather. If precautions are not taken, this ambient environment can have an adverse effect on water demand, slump loss, and the time of setting of the concrete. Read more.

(b) EV Charging Stations Embedded in Concrete Poles                    StressCrete, a manufacturer of spun concrete poles and light fixtures, has selected Flo to supply charging equipment for a new line of concealed charging stations for electric vehicles. The new product, dubbed VoltLock, is encased in StressCrete's Alexander concrete pole to provide protection against tampering. Read more.

(e) Structural Lessons Learned from 9/11                                                Since the 9/11 attacks, engineers have studied the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and a section of the Pentagon. Their conclusions suggest economical ways to improve overall safety, maintain structural integrity and avoid "disproportionate collapse" when damage is inflicted. Read more.

(f) Acid-Resistant Concrete                                                                         ARC Acid Resistant Concrete is applied directly to an existing structure, giving it immediate protection in environments that are too aggressive for conventional concrete and coatings. Read more.

Books

(a) Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group

Written for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry. Read More.

(b) Blissful Souls All Of Us: Author: Dr Jayant D Bapat: Publisher: CreateSpace, USA.

The Book is a result of author's quest to remain happy forever. It focuses on self-improvement through meditation. The real and original nature of self, common to all human beings, is empathic, pure and joyful. However, that ‘self’ has deviated considerably from its original nature. Meditation is a time-tested tool to reach the original nature of self. Like exercise is for the body, meditation is for the mind. Practice controlled breathing or pranayam to assist meditation. The book gives helpful tips to practice meditation for self-improvement. Blissful experiences gained during meditation are useful resolving conflicts, reducing stress, building durable personal relationships and recording improved performance at the work. Meditation and controlled breathing balance the intelligence. The exercise teaches to take a holistic view of life and life’s problems. Book is available in both print and Kindle version. Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures

(a) Investigating Concrete Cracks                                                            There are two basic types of concrete cracks: intrinsic or non-structural and structural. Intrinsic are naturally occurring cracks that are related to concrete as a material such as plastic settlement and shrinkage, freezing of freshly placed concrete, crazing, thermal and drying shrinkage, seasonal temperature changes, corrosion of reinforcement, and alkali-aggregate reactions. Whereas, structural cracks are typically associated with overloads from either construction or service loads. Read more.

 (b) Repairing Concrete Cracks                                                             Concrete structures crack as they age due to deterioration phenomena such as carbonation, chloride attack, and freeze–thaw. Cracks may also occur due to corrosion of steel reinforcements, which can rapidly degrade the structural integrity. Read more.

 (c) Radiation-Shielding Concrete                                                              High-fluidity and self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixes were developed using special aggregates for radiation-shielding concrete. The special aggregates comprised heavyweight and hydrous aggregates (crushed magnetite, crushed serpentine, and their mixtures), which were selected to provide an enhanced attenuation of gamma and neutron radiation, respectively. Read more.

(d) Wheat Straw Ash as Partial Sand Replacement for Production of Eco-Friendly Concrete

Environmentally friendly solution is proposed to investigate the incorporation of wheat straw ash (WSA) by replacing fine sand in concrete. Read more.

(e) Plastic Waste to Build Better Radiation Shielding                    Researchers added powdered plastic waste to concrete and improved its radiation shielding capacity. Read more.

(f) Longest Prestressed Girder                                                                    The Washington State Department of Transportation teamed up with Concrete Technology to produce the longest prestressed girder of more than 223 feet for a bridge over the Puyallup River. Read more.

 (g) Ground Penetrating Radar for Concrete                                      Traditional methods for determining the strength and resilience of concrete in aging structures are costly and require precise data collection. A new study finds merit in a less costly and nondestructive alternative using ground-penetrating radar on concrete bridges to trace differences in compressive strength along decks. Read more.

(a) Considerations for Concrete Beam Design                                               In most circumstances, under-reinforced section concrete beams are generally preferred to either balanced or over-reinforced as they are more economical, and are generally safer. Read more.

(b) Recycling Soft Plastic into Concrete                                          Researchers in Australia have discovered a method to recycle soft plastic as an aggregate in concrete. The resulting material was used last year to build a footpath and car park in Frankston, Australia, and researchers say it can offer a way to reduce the carbon footprint of construction in the country. Read more.

(c) New L.A. Viaduct to Withstand 1000-Year Seismic Event                          The structure, designed to endure a 1,000-year seismic event, features a post-tensioned superstructure with fiber-reinforced polymer concrete and admixtures to curtail shrinkage. Read more.

The team found that titanium dioxide, a powdery substance known best for its uses in sunscreen, paints, plastics and food preservatives, enhances concrete’s natural ability to sequester carbon dioxide. Read more.

(f) Bendable Concrete                                                                             Project from the University of Michigan dramatically lowers CO2 emissions by actually injecting the greenhouse gas into the concrete, converting it into a useful mineral. The resulting concrete is also bendable, leading to less brittle structures that require fewer materials, thereby further reducing emissions. Read more.
