Cement Manufacturing

(a) Carbon8 Systems to Deploy Carbon Capture Technology at Vicat Cement Plant                                                                                        Carbon8 Systems, a UK company that invented and owns a process that combines industrial waste residues or by-products with captured CO2 emissions to produce high-value, lightweight construction aggregates, has signed a commercial agreement with the Vicat Group cement company. Carbon8 Systems will deploy its technology at Vicat’s Montalieu cement plant, near Lyon in France. Read more.

Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures

(a) US Air Force Engineers Develop Rapid-Curing Concrete Patch         Patent examiners granted the U.S. Air Force a 20-year utility patent for a strong, quick-setting concrete using fly ash. Read more.

 (b) ‘Link Slabs’ Used to Prevent Joint Leaks on Rehabbed Bronx Bridges     The slabs of ultra-high-performance concrete are used to connect the ends of prefabricated deck sections over the pier. Ultra-high-performance concrete is steel fiber-reinforced and includes superplasticizers to reduce water content in the mix. It is designed to be stronger and more durable than traditional concrete. The link slabs are connected to the deck by the concrete deck’s reinforcing bars. Read more.

(c) Researchers in Australia Help Battle Sewer Corrosion                         This novel method controls microbial concrete corrosion in sewers by using a brand new, low-cost and environmentally-friendly antimicrobial agent: free nitrous acid (FNA). Read more.

(d) Sustainable Shotcrete Mix Designs for Tunnels with Longer Service Life                                                                                                    Granulated blast furnace slag, in combination with other supplementary cementitious materials, is an effective way of increasing resistance against sulphate attack. Readmore.

(e) Recycled Concrete Can Outperform Traditional Construction   Researchers at UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering conducted side-by-side comparisons of recycled and conventional concrete within two common applications—a building foundation and a municipal sidewalk. They found that the recycled concrete had comparable strength and durability after five years of being in service. Read more.

Books

(a) Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group

Written for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry. Read More.

(b) Blissful Souls All Of Us: Author: Dr Jayant D Bapat: Publisher: CreateSpace, USA.

The Book is a result of author's quest to remain happy forever. It focuses on self-improvement through meditation. The real and original nature of self, common to all human beings, is empathic, pure and joyful. However, that ‘self’ has deviated considerably from its original nature. Meditation is a time-tested tool to reach the original nature of self. Like exercise is for the body, meditation is for the mind. Practice controlled breathing or pranayam to assist meditation. The book gives helpful tips to practice meditation for self-improvement. Blissful experiences gained during meditation are useful resolving conflicts, reducing stress, building durable personal relationships and recording improved performance at the work. Meditation and controlled breathing balance the intelligence. The exercise teaches to take a holistic view of life and life’s problems. Book is available in both print and Kindle version.
