(a)
Commercial Scale Carbon Capture at US Plant
LafargeHolcim, Svante Total and Occidental subsidiary Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV) will evaluate the cost
of the carbon-capture facility, which is expected to capture up to 725,000
tonnes of carbon at LafargeHolcim Portland Cement Plant in
Florence, Colorado. Read more.
(b) Importance of Conveyor Belting Basics
A conveyor belt failure can bring an aggregates operation to a
standstill, which is frustrating because the cost of downtime is expensive.
Trucks hauling product to you can’t unload, and the conveyors ahead of you are
forced to stop and wait until the belt is repaired or replaced. Read more.
Concrete, Mineral and Chemical Admixtures
(a) Depleting Reserves Threaten Global Sand Demand
Shrinking availability of sand will be the primary factor restraining
global demand growth, according to newly-published research on the global
construction aggregates market from Freedonia Group. Supply constraints and higher material
prices for virgin sand will continue to shift consumer preference toward
crushed stone and secondary substitutes globally. Read more.
(b) Good Vibration is Key to Quality Concrete
Internal vibrators, sometimes referred to as “spud” or
“porker” vibrators are the most common tools used to achieve concrete
consolidation in foundations, columns and walls. In addition to consolidating
freshly placed concrete and ensuring concrete completely flows into corners of
the formwork and around reinforcement, vibrators blend different concrete lifts
together into a single solid mass of concrete and minimize surface voids (bug
holes) and lift lines on exposed concrete surfaces. Read more.

Photovoltaic Elements in Concrete Facades
Researchers in
Germany have developed a solar facade with photovoltaic elements they claim
deliver up to 50% more solar energy than conventional, planar-mounted solar
modules. The researchers have also demonstrated the feasibility of three
different ways to mount photovoltaic elements on carbon-concrete facades. The
three-meter prototype consists of nine panels based on an aluminum compound.
The PV elements of the facade can be tilted to capture more sunlight. Read more.
(d) NIST Tests Could Lead to Stronger Building Codes, Improved Design Tools The results of this study reported in the Journal of Structural Engineering, indicate that structures built to code are not always equipped to survive the forces induced by extreme shifts in temperature, but the data gained here could help researchers develop and validate new design tools and building codes that bolster fire safety. Electric Truck Mixers
Liebherr and Designwerk have
developed fully electric truck mixers with 10 and 12 m³ drums on a 5-axle
chassis. Read more.
(a) Mineral
Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor
& Francis Group
Written
for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable
concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks
at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and
mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also
examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to
cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it
encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement
and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction
industry. Read More.
(b) Blissful Souls All Of Us: Author: Dr Jayant D Bapat:
Publisher: CreateSpace, USA.
The Book is a
result of author's quest to remain happy forever. It focuses on
self-improvement through meditation. The real and original nature of self,
common to all human beings, is empathic, pure and joyful. However, that ‘self’
has deviated considerably from its original nature. Meditation is a time-tested
tool to reach the original nature of self. Like exercise is for the body,
meditation is for the mind. Practice controlled breathing or pranayam to assist
meditation. The book gives helpful tips to practice meditation for
self-improvement. Blissful experiences gained during meditation are useful
resolving conflicts, reducing stress, building durable personal relationships
and recording improved performance at the work. Meditation and controlled breathing
balance the intelligence. The exercise teaches to take a holistic view of life
and life’s problems. Book is available in both print and Kindle version. Visit
the link to buy/review the book.
