Cement Manufacturing

(a) Processed sewage pellets (PSP) as rotary kiln fuel:

Having received approval from The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Lafarge began its evaluation of processed sewage pellets (PSP) for use as a new waste-derived fuel at its cement plant. The results will be reported in April 2013. If the trials are successful, the addition of PSP shall take the coal replacement in the plant to 50%, which also includes tyres and recycled liquid fuels. Waste-derived fuels offer many benefits such as maintaining the environmental performance, reducing carbon footprint and managing high energy costs. Read more

(b) Use of alternative fuels in Indian cement industry:

With the rising fuel costs and the focus on reduction of carbon footprint, Indian cement plants are likely to use alternate fuels in greater variety and quantity in future. Read more.

(c) Cement mill heat balance:

Only about 5% of the power supplied to cement ball mill is used for size reduction. Rest is wasted in heat generation. Therefore heat balance on cement mill is important. Read more.

(d) Ball mill sizing:

This paper explains how to size a cement ball mill with the well-known Bond formula. Efficiency correction factors are applied with the Bond equation. The method is valid both for clinker grinding and for raw materials grinding. This method only gives a rough and initial idea for sizing a cement ball mill. Read more.

(e) Wind power for CEMEX plant:

The two turbines in Victorville will produce an estimated 6,500 megawatt hours of electricity in an average year -- enough to sustain 650 average homes, according to CEMEX. Read  more.

(f) Giving back to the community:

As part of a larger global movement in honour of parent company Holcim Ltd's centennial in 2012, the initiative encouraged all 3000 Holcim Canada employees to give back to the communities where they live and work. Read more.

(g) Nano-enabled cement:

Though the application of nanotechnology in cement industry is an emerging area, the trends in patent data indicate that commercial adaptation of this technology has already been started and in the near future nano-enabled cement is poised to occupy the cement industry in a big way. Read more.

Concrete, Mineral & Chemical Admixtures

(a) Common man's method to check the health of concrete:

When a builder claims that his buildings are the strongest and most durable he invariably means that the building’s concrete, apart from all other material used, is of the best quality. How do we verify these claims? The only thing that a layman can do is visual inspection through which one can determine that a structure is devoid of any irregularities or visible fractures. The core tests are mainly suitable for determining the strength of major projects like dams and bridges or on big constructions. Being a semi-destructive testing method, this test may not be the best option for smaller buildings and constructions.  The non-destructive testing is helpful in determining the strength of a building without harming the structure. Read more.

(b) High-rise construction:

The future of high-rise construction will be high-strength, more durable, and more sustainable concrete. Read More.

(c) Giant concrete beams:

The massive precast girders — each measuring about 27 metres (90 feet) in length. Have a look.

(d) Engineers' mindset is important:

Groundwater infiltration is not just an 'operational nuisance'  but could be a ‘structural integrity concern’. Startling revelation by US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Read more.

(e) Pervious concrete:

Building walkways, access roads and parking lots with pervious concrete is among the best ways to recharge groundwater and manage storm water runoff. Read more.

(f) Top ten construction projects of 2012:

It has been a year for construction industry. Read more.

Teaching, Training and Research

(a) ICI-JDB Certificate Course:

Useful for: (a) Engineers working at construction site and interested in learning optimum utilisation of mineral admixtures for strength and durability. (b) Marketing engineers, who frequently face customer queries regarding benefits of blended cement or admixtures. (c) Engineers working on product development. (d) Students/researchers interested in pursuing studies in the area. Read More

(b) Professional Training on Concrete by distance education:

JDB anounce two-day professional training programme on concrete in distance education mode. Read more.

(c) Cement hydration:

The challenges involved in the molecular-level understanding of cement hydration are related to problems in the aging and degradation of materials, which are related to environmental sustainability. The progress in one problem could be effectively translated into insights in another. Read the latest from MIT’s Concrete Sustainability Hub

(d) ACI e-learning courses:

Flexible, online, on-demand learning tools from ACI. Read More.

(e) GBI guiding principles compliance course with optional personnel certification:

Useful for facilities managers, engineers and consultants to learn about the guiding principles assessment requirements mandated by US Government Executive Order  13514. The course provides the option to be certified as a Guiding Principles Compliance Professional (GPCP). Read more

(f) Zero energy building with micro-algae:

In Germany, microalgae will power and shade the BIQ House, a zero-energy building featuring the world’s first bio-reactor facade. The BIQ house is currently under construction for the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg. In addition to generating renewable energy and providing shade to keep the inside of the building cooler on sunny days, it also creates a visually interesting look that architects and building owners will like. Read more.

(g) Autoclave aerated concrete:

The material, best known as AAC, has been heralded as the building material of the new millennium. It's a lightweight, easily-crafted manufactured stone, strong enough to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes when reinforced with steel. Read more.

(h) Conrete for power generation:

Concrete is being used for energy storage and power generation. Read more.

Books

(a) Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete, Author: Jayant D. Bapat, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group:

Written for engineers, this book focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. For each mineral admixture, the book looks at manufacturing and processing, physical characteristics, chemical and mineralogical composition, quality control, and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures, it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry. Read More.

(b) Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures, 15th edition. PCA Publication:

The guide to applications, methods, and materials, has been the industry’s primary reference on concrete technology for over 85 years. Read more.

(c) Super-High-Strength High performance Concrete, Author: Pu Xincheng, CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group:

With a view towards improved production that optimizes the strength and durability of concrete, the book presents a host of topics on the cutting edge of concrete research. Read more.
